One of the questions our customers ask is, "What's an Izzy?"
The real question is, WHO is Izzy?
For over a decade, Chris Tarling, Izzy's Inventor and Co-founder, fought to address the waste in the cosmetics industry. While developing prototypes in 2019 (more on that in a minute), his then 3-year-old daughter, Izzy, walked in wearing a shirt that read "No More Waste."
Her beautiful smile melted his heart, and he said, "We have to create a sustainable beauty brand for her generation. This revolutionary Zero Waste beauty brand will be called Izzy, so I will never forget the reason for creating it."
With his young daughter as his motivation (and the company's name decided), Chris stumbled across a unique packaging solution that could revolutionize the beauty industry. Ironically, he wasn't at beauty industry expo.
He was at his dentist's office!
Chris and his team had been struggling to find a recyclable package solution for Izzy's makeup. As he watched the dental assistant place instruments on the table in front of him, he wondered if steel might be the solution. If they could reuse the tools in dental offices and medical practices, why not use it with makeup?
That flash of insight, along with the inspiration of his young daughter, fueled the innovation behind Izzy Beauty, Inc. Shortly after, Chris partnered with an industry expert Shannon Goldberg, who joined as Co-Founder and Advisor. Shannon, also a Mom, spearheaded the branding and innovated the makeup line. Like Chris, her passion for helping reduce environmental waste for her children's generation became her mission.
Chris's daughter, Izzy, has been a part of the brand each step of the way. One of her favorite things was joining Shannon on photoshoots.
Before launching the product line in April 2020 (in the middle of the pandemic), Chris assembled a panel of advisors to guide the development process and think through the manufacturing, distribution, and shipping process to ensure it was 100% Zero Waste.
Around this time, one of the most ingenious parts of Izzy's design was uncovered - Its shipping container! Not only is plastic damaging the environment, but most paper shipping containers pollute landfills around the globe. For the Izzy brand to remain a complete Zero Waste product, they had to find a "Zero Paper" solution.
Committed to ensuring the Izzy brand would be completely Zero Waste, Chris and Shannon scoured the usual sources for containers without much luck. In a flash of brilliance, it occurred to them that Rent the Runway® had already found a recyclable shipping container that might also work for makeup.
Shortly after contacting the manufacturer, Chris and Shannon had the final piece to this amazing product line: The Izzy Shipping bag was born! It doubles as a travel pouch for all your makeup and creates a closed-loop process that won Izzy over 15 awards for sustainable innovation and beauty category product lines.
The best part today is that Chris and his daughter, now 6, work together in the Izzy factory to receive used Izzy products and recycle 100% of them.
