Earth Day is just around the corner! April 22, 2024 marks the 54th anniversary of the modern environmental movement’s conception, and there’s no better time to celebrate and honor the natural beauty of our planet.
Ways to Celebrate Earth Day
54 years on, Earth Day is celebrated each year as a way to honor the workings of our natural world. There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day, both on its anniversary and beyond:
Plant a Tree
DID YOU KNOW?
Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines.
– One Tree Planted
Planting a tree is a great way to contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It will also grant you the satisfaction of seeing your efforts flourish and grow each year. Here’s how to plant a tree in three simple steps:
1. Prepare your site. Mark out where your tree will be placed and give your tree the best chance of survival by removing weeds and cutting the grass.
2. Dig the hole. Press your spade into the ground before pushing it forward to create a hole. Ensure it’s deep enough for the tree roots – the root plug should sit 2cm below ground level.
3. Plant the root plug. Insert the plug and ensure it is at ground level before covering it with soil or turf. Thoroughly firm down the soil around the tree.
Clean Up
DID YOU KNOW?
The average American tosses 4.9 pounds of trash per day.
– Environment America Research & Policy Center
Joining a clean up initiative (or starting your own!) is a great way to keep your local environment clean and tidy. Volunteering with a local group can be super fun – it’s a great way to meet like-minded people and experience the rewarding feeling of doing something great for the people around you and the planet we call home.
Go for a Walk
DID YOU KNOW?
Every gallon of gasoline you save avoids 22 pounds of CO2 emissions, and every mile you walk burns an average of 100 calories. Avoiding just 10 miles of driving every week would eliminate about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year!
– Human Resources University of Michigan
Ditch your car for a day and plan an adventure starting from your front door. If you’re feeling super adventurous, leave your phone at home too! Grab a map, plan your route, and see where your two feet take you.
Not only is this a great way to boost your mood and mental health, you'll save money on fuel and help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Support Our Pollinators
DID YOU KNOW?
Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination. One out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollinators such as bees.
– WWF
Encouraging bees and other pollinating creatures to visit your garden can make a significant impact on the environment, and it’s fairly easy to do! Spend Earth Day making a beehouse and incorporating pollinator-friendly plants into your yard.
To attract butterflies, plant brightly-hued asters, coneflowers, goldenrod, ironweed, and Joe-Pye weed. To attract bees, opt for annuals like alyssum, calendula, cleome, salvia, sunflowers, and verbena. Bees are also attracted to herbs such as lavender, rosemary, and mint.
Make a Pledge
DID YOU KNOW?
In 2018, the recycling, composting, combustion with energy recovery and landfilling of MSW saved over 193 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2E). This is comparable to the emissions that could be reduced from taking almost 42 million cars off the road in a year.
– United States Environmental Protection Agency
Pledging to do something throughout the year is a great way to honor Earth Day all year round. This could look like a commitment to:
Reducing, reusing, and recycling your household waste. This is a great way to protect the planet by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.
Supporting local farmers and sustainable businesses. Most farmers employ sustainable growing practices to reduce air pollution and minimize packaging waste.
Conserving energy at home and work. Simple actions like turning off electricals when not in use are great ways to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
